I will thank SEGA very much. One of my favorite four-button games of the 1990s, ESWAT City Under Siege, was released on mobile phones under the name ESWAT: City Under Siege Classic. ESWAT: City Under Siege Classic is not just another video game, it’s a sky of memories of the once legendary 16-bit games that are associated with each child’s childhood.
Sometimes, you only know shooting games like Contra or Metal Slug, without knowing that before, ESWAT City Under Siege was born and is one of the first 16 bit games in the world.
Familiar story
ESWAT City Under Siege Classic is a game that looks quite like Shinobi. In the context of the future, the player will incarnate and control a blonde cop named Duke Oda, a rookie of the Cyber Police Force in Liberty City. In this game, your mission will be to fight crime gangs, bring peace to the city of Liberty – where there is chaos due to many street gangs appear. Only you, the police officer carrying the ICE Combat Suits, can stop the escalating street violence.
Gameplay
This game has many levels, in the first and second levels of the game, the Duke Oda is entirely human in nature and can only use a shotgun. The enemy just launches a shot will kill him. At the end of level 2, Duke Oda gets ICE Combat Suit and this armor will bring to your character a variety of new weapons such as missiles, plasma, super shot … and the ability to hit better. But this armor also makes you bigger, moving more slowly, so it will be harder to avoid attacks from enemies.
ESWAT: City Under Siege Classic is not a new development from the beginning, this game uses the SEGA Forever emulator core to bring 16bit games to the mobile platform, with high performance and many customizations. The in-game controls are the only thing that makes me unhappy playing ESWAT: City Under Siege Classic on the phone. Wish I have a real MFi controller, because the virtual key on the screen of the game is quite difficult to use and because they are located close to each other and easy to touch wrong. This virtual keypad consists of a navigation pad and 3 function buttons: a button to activate the weapon, a button to jump and a button to activate your jet.
Even after getting used to the control system and having played ESWAT City Under Siege before, this game is still quite difficult for me. The character with armor is not agile, the reward is quite small, while enemies can appear unexpectedly and injure you. If you are defeated, you will lose the weapon you are using and will have to find it again during the game.
16bit graphics
Online games often build the name for themselves by applying high-tech graphics and sound techniques. And ESWAT: City Under Siege Classic does pretty well that even though it only owns 16bit graphics. But do not expect anything really lively about this game at all. In the first level, you can see the buildings with beautiful details & lighting, but things get worse at the later levels, the context seems repetitive and very less variety or change. However, I still like the dark feeling of the game. Explosive effects, the animation is displayed well accompanied by sound effects then.
As for the sound of the game, there are some good songs, though not too complicated, these sounds are still attractive to me personally.
Overview
Although it’s a slow start, it’s a long game, with dozens of weapons waiting for you, the strongest bosses at the end of each level waiting to destroy you. Unique 16-bit graphics, simple but high-quality audio and more. Although it does not carry intense gun battles like Gunstar Heroes or Contra III / Probotector, ESWAT is still a very interesting game. It’s a bit quiet and comfortable and for SEGA fans it will definitely want to play this game right away to relive the memories one by one.
